The "Montreal TransMedTech Institute" in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Technology

Over the past decades, Polytechnique Montréal has established an interdisciplinary group of Life Sciences and Engineering experts who have been leading the development of cutting-edge technologies in the biomedical engineering and medical technology sectors. This sustainable and successful model is based on the creation and maintenance of strong ties with a large hospital network (CHU Sainte-Justine, Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montreal, Montreal Heart Institute, Jewish General Hospital) within the Montreal area, as well as with international institutional and industrial partners to provide health innovative solutions for complex diseases, that could be tested and implemented within the healthcare system.We will take advantage of this transformative integrated university-hospital-industry framework to shape the future of medical technologies through the creation of the Montreal TransMedTech Institute, a transdisciplinary, transversal and translational initiative aiming at engineering the next generation of diagnostic/prognostic, intervention/rehabilitation and medical technologies for a spectrum of complex diseases across all age groups.The Canada First Research Excellence Fund investment will enable Polytechnique to consolidate and further develop the implementation of an outstanding integrative biomedical engineering research initiative based on a transversal approach spanning from the health problem to the most efficient development and implementation of the technologies with a "living lab" approach. This co-creation space with contributions from patients, caregivers, engineers, clinicians, applied/fundamental research scientists, students, health system stakeholders, and policy makers will be implemented from the inception to the development, implementation and assessment of new medical technologies, ensuring that innovations meet real needs with reduced technology transfer obstacles.
