Data-driven software systems, such as music and video recommender applications, voice assistance systems, decision-making support tools, and intelligent cyber-physical systems (e.g., drones), have experienced significant growth over the past years. While the technology behind these systems is becoming increasingly powerful, the current data-driven systems suffer from a user experience (UX) design innovation crisis, limiting their ability to truly enhance people's lives and fulfill practical needs. Additionally, flaws and failures in the UX design of these systems can have detrimental impacts, resulting in economic losses and life-threatening incidences. The overall objective of this research program is to investigate, create, and evaluate a new set of UX design-support techniques and tools that harness the power of data-driven intelligent systems to enable their end-users. These techniques and tools will facilitate the collaborative and creative UX design process and help software practitioners create more usable and innovative data-driven systems. To achieve this, this research program will focus on the identification, modeling, detection, and utilization of mechanics-oriented UX design patterns. These design patterns capture a set of fundamental and recurring user actions that are frequent in data-driven systems. Leveraging these patterns, creativity-support tools will be investigated to support UX designers in the organization and retrieval of design artifacts (e.g., sketches, mockups, and storyboards). Additionally, tools that use these design patterns will also be explored for synchronous and asynchronous design collaboration among diverse and multi-disciplinary stakeholders (e.g., designers, developers, data scientists, and end-users). Together, these efforts feature a human-centered perspective, involving designers and other software stakeholders during the entire process of proposing, creating, and evaluating the techniques and tools.Through the innovative exploration of the mechanics-focused UX design patterns, the dynamic creativity support techniques, and the cross-disciplinary collaboration design tools for data-driven systems, this research program will provide ground-breaking contributions to advance UX design research. Because of the human-centered approach, the research outcomes can easily be transferred to practice to support the UX design of data-driven systems.
