Safran Landing Systems (SLS) is launching a project named Generic Large Aircraft (GLA) to tackle system complexity and time pressure brought on by airframers. Currently, few engineering and product assets are opportunistically reused because of the re-engineering cost and lack of information availability. To address this issue, the GLA project aims to define the framework needed to reuse assets strategically. The company plans to consolidate its experience by generalizing artifacts at various abstraction levels. More concretely, a preliminary list of artifacts includes requirements, products, plans, safety elements, and verification and validation experience. The proposed collaborative research project is pivotal to GLA. Its objective is to define the methods, tools, processes, and mechanism needed to manage knowledge and product lines and reuse them on new programs. The strategic reuse approach will implement product line engineering (PLE) concepts while leveraging the structured approach brought by model-based systems engineering (MBSE). First, the project involves a trade study of existing methods and tools and adapting them to the company's needs. Second, the processes will describe how to create, maintain, and instantiate knowledge and product lines as building blocks. These processes will be documented as workflows and integrated within those existing at the partner organization. Third, the mechanism will be a model that systems architects will use for instantiation. To ensure validity, the relationship between all GLA elements will be represented in a metamodel. Finally, the outcomes of this project will be tested on a proof of concept and disseminated to the wider academic and industrial community.
