Governments throughout the world are acknowledging climate change and its potentially catastrophic consequences. Combating climate change requires a comprehensive strategy that includes clean automotive technologies. Green House Gas (GHG) emissions due to transportation are considered one of the main contributors to climate change and are likely to become worse with the growth of densely populated urban centers around the world. Even limited forms of electrification, will lead to substantive reductions in global GHG emissions. As such, vehicle electrification, should be considered an essential element of an integrated strategy for combating climate change. Our industry partner, D&V Electronics, is a supplier of test equipment for vehicle electrification. This proposal is a continuation of a project with D&V Electronics on developing condition monitoring, testing and characterization tools and strategies for electric vehicle powertrain components. This cooperation has so far resulted in the development of a battery cell tester and an algorithm referred to as the Industrial Extended Multi-Scale Principle Components Analysis (IEMSPCA) that has previously been applied to automotive starters and generators. The IEMSPCA has been commercialized and is now an integral element of all D&V test cells. The battery cell tester has also been commercialized and has functionalities that place amongst the most advanced in the world. It is capable of performing drive cycle testing, impedance characterization, and coulombic efficiency measurements in an integrated form on automotive test cells. This proposal builds and sustains the existing successful collaboration between McMaster and D&V Electronics. It involves further research and development along two themes: 1) Signal-based Fault Detection and Diagnosis for rotating components; and 2) Model-based battery characterization and testing. The research outcomes will be integrated onto D&V platforms.
