Antibiotic resistance is a global problem that threatens not only our ability to treat infections caused by bacteria, but also our economy. As we steadily exhaust effective antibiotics, preventing the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria in environments is critical to continue our ability to use existing antibiotics. Polyamyna Nanotech Inc., a Canadian company, has developed a novel antimicrobial (AM) nanotechnology (patent pending) that has shown superior antimicrobial property against multiple antibiotic resistant bacteria. Currently used antimicrobials suffer from selecting for resistant bacteria. We will evaluate antimicrobial compounds being developed by Polyamyna Nanotech Inc. for their ability to select resistant bacteria, uncover the underlying resistance mechanism(s) and optimize the technology accordingly. This work will therefore result in the development of an antimicrobial spray that will prevent the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria and will not select for resistant bacteria.
