Photonic component technology currently represents a strong vector for innovation in several high-endapplications in various industries, ranging from biomedical sensing to advanced laser manufacturing. In thepast decade, ultrafast laser processing of dielectric materials has become a dominant research technique thathas enabled the engineering of complex photonic functions with unmatched precision in common transparentmaterials like bulk glass samples and optical fibers. Many photonic components traditionally processed usingultraviolet light, such as fiber and volume Bragg gratings, can now be fabricated with much betterperformances by using infrared femtosecond lasers that take advantage of the nonlinear multiphoton absorptionprocess. In order to bring such ultrafast laser processing technology to an industrial level, we need to addressthe remaining scientific and technological challenges, for example mitigating the photoinduced losses resultingfrom ultrafast laser processing. Well supported by Teraxion, a world-leading player in the fiber Bragg gratingindustry, the proposed CRD project aims at further developing the ultrafast laser processing of transparentmaterials achieved by the applicant during the past ten years to be able to produce high performances photoniccomponents. Through a strongly interactive joint development initiative that will leverage the R&D capabilitiesof both organizations, the proposed CRD project will pursue the paramount technology development requiredto promote femtosecond laser structured photonic components to the market.
