Adzuki (Vigna angularis) is a valuable legume grown in Canada for export to Asia, where it is primarily used to produce bean paste for sweet buns and cakes. Adzuki bean exporters, including our partner, Hensall District Co-operative and their 6,000 member owneres, are interested in providing premium quality beans to these markets to obtain the best prices for them. The highest priced beans in Japanese markets are large and pale-red in colour. Ontario adzuki beans are almost exclusively of the variety Erimo, which has an ideal paste making composition, but has small, dark red seeds.The goals of the proposed work are to: 1) breed high-yielding adzuki varieties with large, pale-coloured seeds and excellent paste making qualities and 2) determine the genetics controlling resistance to biotic stress associated with Brown Spot and infection by soybean cyst nematodes in Adzuki. Additionally, molecular marker trait associations will be explored in the germplasm that will be evaluated and developed. The research in the project on Brown Spot in Adzuki will: develop a screening procedure to identify resistant germplasm, characterize variation in the pathogen (Pseudomonas) isolates obtained from Adzuki crops in Ontario, and develop molecular markers for resistance to Brown Spot in Adzuki. Therefore, the work will provide unique germplasm for high quality variety development and the tools needed to increase the speed and precision of breeding superior adzuki bean varieties suited for production in Canada, that command premium prices in international markets.
