Artificial groundwater recharge is an effective method to solve the groundwater overexploitation. However, the clogging of aquifer during recharge limits the application of artificial recharge. In this study, we aim to clarify the mechanisms of complex clogging in porous media under the coexistence of microbes and suspended particles. Through a combination of batch/column experiments and multiple technologies (such as atomic force microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscope, X-ray micro-computed tomography facility and high-throughput sequencing), we aim to explore the formation process of biofilm on the porous media and its effect on the characteristics of porous media. The interaction between different kinds of microbes (or extracellular polymeric substances) and suspended particles will be explored, and the impact of these interactions on the transport and retention of suspended particles and the hydraulic conductivity of porous media will be clarified. The effects of recharge water, recharge methods, and hydrodynamic conditions on the formation, stability, and detach of microbes-particle combined substances will be investigated. The response relationship among influencing factors of recharge, parameters of microbial characteristic, and deposition of suspended particles will be identified. This study aims to provide theoretical foundation for the solution of complex clogging during artificial recharge.
