High-speed electrooptic modulators with Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) architecture have been widely used in analog fiber-optic transmission systems, community access television (CATV) distribution systems and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) telecommunication systems, owing to its low half-wave voltage and high bandwidth. However, the critical issues influencing the utilization with MZI configuration are the complexity of fabrication and high price. Recently, electrooptic polymers attracted extensive attention due to its low dispersion, ease of deposition onto many substrates and the ability to integrate the active polymer into an optical circuit. In this program, a polymer modulator based on the attenuated total reflection (ATR) geometry has been proposed. Initial results have showed that the new modulator not only can make up the deficits of the MZI architecture. It has also demonstrated the potential in application of the CATV system, communication between buildings and fiber enter homes due to its low cost. Double channel modulation has also been demonstrated in a single ATR configuration.
