中更新世气候转型(MPT)的驱动机理和反馈效应对于理解全球重大气候突变/转折事件非常重要,这其中南大洋可能是一个关键靶区。然而,目前有关MPT的研究多集中在低纬地区,高纬海区的研究极少。IODP 374航次在罗斯海钻取的U1525A孔中的硅藻沉积与MPT有很好的对应关系,这为MPT的研究提供了难得的素材。本项目以U1525A孔为研究材料,通过硅藻统计鉴定、生源组分(TOC、Opal和Babio)和硅藻δ30Si重建的硅藻群落组成、生产力和营养物硅酸的利用状况来刻画1.8 Ma以来罗斯海硅藻沉积变化。在此基础上,将罗斯海硅藻沉积变化信息与表征MPT的全球气候要素(深海δ18O和大气CO2含量)和MPT控制的区域海洋因素(南大洋风尘、海冰和深部流通状况)对比,探寻罗斯海硅藻沉积是否对MPT有驱动作用或反馈效应,进而揭示南大洋与MPT的关联机制,从而明确南大洋在过去气候重大转型期中的角色。

Knowledge of the driving mechanism and feedbacks of the mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) is important for understanding the global climate abrupt/transition events, of which the Southern Ocean may be a key target. However, most previous studies on the MPT have been focused on the low latitudes, but not high latitudes. The diatom deposition in Hole U1525A drilled from the Ross Sea by IODP Expedition 374 show a correspondence with the MPT, providing a valuable material for the MPT research. In this project, diatom assemblages, productivity and nutrient reconstructed by diatom statistical identification, biogenic components (TOC, Opal and Babio) and δ30Si were measured for Hole U1525A since 1.8 Ma to reveal the changes of diatom deposition in the Ross Sea. Based on the comparisons of diatom deposition records in the Ross Sea with the global climate factors (deep sea δ18O and atmospheric CO2 concentration) and local environmental factors (dust inputs, sea ice cover and deep ventilation in the Southern Ocean) during the MPT, this project will try to explore whether diatom deposition in the Ross Sea has driven the MPT or acted as a feedback on the MPT, and then reveal the relationships between the Southern Ocean and the MPT, so as to clarify the role of the Southern Ocean in the past major climate transitions.
