Indian monsoon is an important component of global climate system, which is relevant to the living environments for huge population in Asia. Variability of the Indian monsoon has always been one of the hot topics in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology. The IODP 353 Expedition which scientific theme was to understand the rainfall in the core regions of the Indian monsoon recovered deep sea sediments at sites in the the Bay of Bengal/Andaman Sea, to reconstruct changes in Indian monsoon circulation. Among these sites, U1446 and U1448 located in the Mahanadi Basin and Andaman Sea respectively with high sedimentation rate and rich carbonate deposits, and showing a remarkable salinity gradient of summer monsoon precipitation in the time scale and spatial scales in comparing the two sites, which potentially provides excellent materials for obtaining high resolution information about monsoon change from foraminifers. However, preliminary study of the U1446 by the applicants revealed clear but varying degrees of foraminifer dissolution albeit its depth well above the lysocline of this region. This poses severe uncertainty for the estimation of past production, reconstruction of SST and in turn SSS, hence undermining the retrieval of the paleomonsoon information from the site. This project sets out with a systematic investigation of the planktonic and benthic foraminifers of the U1446. First, to identify and quantify the foraminifer dissolution of different species at different intervals; secondly, by analyzing B/Ca and 14C dating of selected shell tests and with a comparative study of site U1448, to understand the controlling factors/causes and mechanism of the unexpected but observed dissolution; thirdly, to evaluate its effect on the use of proxies such as Mg/Ca, paleoproductivity etc. With the improved understanding thus obtained, we shall generate medium- resolution 1.2 Ma records of Indian monsoon variation, which forms our contribution to the understanding of the long-term rainfall evolution in the core areas of the Indian monsoon.
