From 2000 to 2003, we have studied the optical spectral performance, especially the upconversion luminescence of the erbium doped glass and other glasses. The three-photon upconversion phenomena were observed in erbium-ytterbium-codoped phosphate glasses. CW and Q-switched operations of erbium glass laser were demonstrated. The highest power is 78.3mW and the slope efficiency is over 15% at CW operation mode. Q-switched pulses were obtained with over 10mW of average power and less than 8 ns of pulse width. These parameters are much higher than those mentioned in the project application forms for NSFC. Influence of these conditions, such as concentrations of erbium and ytterbium ions, length of the glass medium and the cavity,on the laser performance were studied. The effect of Upconversion luminescence on the laser was also pay attention to. The experimental results takes the lead position in China and reached the advanced level in the world.
