印度、华南及华北陆块在古-中元古代超大陆中的相互位置是近年来的研究热点,但存在华北北缘-印度西缘、华北南缘-印度东缘、扬子/华夏-印度北缘等多种重建模式。沉积盆地是深部岩浆事件和造山运动等地质过程的浅表响应,对比它们在超大陆循环中是否经历相似的演化历程,是研究超大陆中各地质体相互关系的重要手段,也是解决相关争论的关键资料。目前针对印度前寒武纪地质的研究相对缺乏,而覆盖于印度中北部克拉通基底之上的Vindhyan超群,完整记录了该地区参与古-中元古代超大陆聚合与裂解的过程,为研究区域沉积构造演化,进行印度-华南-华北对比提供了重要素材。本项目拟运用沉积学、年代学和单矿物原位地球化学,结合全岩元素、同位素和碎屑统计等方法,研究Vindhyan超群的沉积时限、源区特征和构造属性,探讨印度古-中元古代的盆山耦合过程,为印度-华南-华北在古-中元古代超大陆中的位置和相互间的关系提供关键约束。

Supercontinental cycle in the Earth history has been considered as fundamental factor in explaining the changes of paleogeography, paleoclimate, biosphere as well the formation of global scale mineral deposits, and thus received extensive attention in the past decades. One of the most controversial issues is the possible linkage among continents of India, South China and North China in the configuration of Columbia supercontinent. Similar geological processes are expected to occur in continents that were linked to each other during the supercontinental cycles and thus can be as effective criterion to judge linkage among continents. Therefore, the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins are essential in understanding paleogeographic reconstruction of continents, in view of possible record of completed eroded rocks in basins. This requires full study of basin evolution in possibly adjacent continents. However, in contrast to the intensively studied South China Block and North China Craton, coeval sedimentary successions in India are loosely investigated, leaving comparison among these continents unclear. Therefore, well preserved sedimentary succession known as the Vindhyan Supergroup in the India that is closely associated with the assembly and breakup of Paleo- to Meso-proterozoic supercontinent, provides excellent opportunity to investigate the coupled evolution of basin and tectonics, and thus the possible affinity among India, South China and North China. In this project, detailed studies on sedimentology, geochronology and geochemistry, together with modal point counting of clastics will be carried out, in an attempt to constrain the formation time, nature of source rocks and tectonic affinity of the Vindhyan Supergroup, and to provide new insights into the crustal and tectonic evolution of the India. In combination with comparison among coeval sedimentary strata in South China, North China and other continents, the new results from this project will shed new light on the reconstruction of the Paleo- to Meso-proterozoic supercontinent.
