Imazalil (IMZ) and procymidone (PRO) is a kind of broad-spectrum, efficient and low-toxicity fungicide. They are recommended by the Chinese ministry of agriculture for use in vegetables and fruits which is confirmed to have antiandrogenic activity. Due to the good effect of disease and insect pest control on fruits and vegetables, they are still widely used today. Their residues in the environment, fruits and vegetables have serious potential risks to the ecological environment and food safety. As a fungicide, IMZ and PRO target a wide range of microorganisms and thus may have detrimental effects on our gut microbiota, a complex microbial ecosystem formed by a large variety of microorganisms that had coevolved with the host. This can lead to enterohepatic circulation disorders, and eventually lead to intestinal and liver diseases. Here, IMZ and PRO were oral administered to C57BL/6 female mice at the level of environment-related concentration during the gestation and lactation periods in the F0 generation. Biochemical indicators, pathological section, related gene and protein levels, and microbial abundance tests were used to assess the effects of maternal IMZ and PRO exposure on F0, F1 or F2 mice, including gut microbiota, intestinal barrier function, enterohepatic circulation, immune system and endocrine system effects. The aim was to study the toxic effects of IMZ and PRO on dams and their early life and adolescent offsprings. The results can provide evidence for evaluating the effects of fungicides and other agricultural chemical pollutants on human health in special periods.
