Interactions between invasive plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in enhancing the invasiveness of exotic plant species. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are two of the most limiting elements influencing the growth and development for plants and AMF, thus changes in N and P contents may alter the interactions between plants and AMF in terrestrial ecosystems, however, it remains unclear how available N and P and their balance (ecological stoichiometry, N:P) shift AMF associations on native and invasive plants and the associated mechanisms. To address these questions, I will select five pairs of invasive species and their congeneric native species as focal species to examine and compare the variations in plants and AMF association under different N and P conditions and the underlying mechanisms through common garden and laboratory experiments. Specifically, this project will focus on the following contents: (i) the variations in AMF associations with invasive and native plants under different N and P nutrient levels and N:P ratios; (ii) changes in root exudates from invasive and native plants induced by different N and P supplies; (iii) the role of different metabolites in root exudates from invasive and native plants in AMF spore germination. This project will concentrate on the shifts in plant-AMF associations induced by different N and P supplies, differences in metabolites in root exudates and their effects on AMF spore germination, and answer the following questions: (i) do the nutrient levels and ratios of N and P mediate AMF associations with invasive and native plants? (ii) if so, what are the roles of root exudates induced by different N and P supplies in the AMF association with invasive and native plants? The significance of this project is to explore the roles of AMF in plant invasions and to advance our understanding of the adaptive strategies of invasive plants in new ranges.
