The Ediacaran-Cambrian transition witnessed the significant changes of paleo-environments and rapid evolution of metazoans. Liuchapo Formation in South China preserves the continuous sedimentary strata of this transition. Previous studies suggested that the oceanic carbon cycling was broadly consistent with the redox-stratified scenario of the Yangtze Block during this period. However, the organic carbon isotope (δ13Corg) values of Liuchapo Formation are very low, even lower than the δ13Corg values recorded in the sediments of anoxic basins during the Phanerozoic, suggesting that Liuchapo Formation could have a higher proportion of chemoautotrophs and methanotrophs. This could result from a unique pattern of carbon cycling and the unique redox-stratified conditions during this period. This project is to unravel the mechanism of negative δ13Corg anomalies for Liuchapo Formation at Longbizui and Bahuang sections via in-situ study of δ13Corg using NanoSIMS. Combined with other in-situ studies of organic matter, the sizes, morphologies, distributions, relationships with minerals, organic molecular structures, chemical compositions and δ13Corg values of organic matter are characterized. The target of the project is to recognize the microbial communities of different carbon assimilation pathways and to obtain the blend style of those microbial communities for Liuchapo Formation. The results will provide constraints for the mechanism of negative δ13Corg anomalies, the pattern of carbon cycling and the marine chemistry for Liuchapo Formation.
