The construction of molecular memristor, which can mimic the working function of human synapses and neurons, is of great importance for enhancing the judging, decision-making and learning capability of modern computer systems. Fine-tuning of the electronic properties of functional polymer materials through the versatile design-cum-synthesis strategy is considered as the key issue to achieve molecular memristors. Solid-state electrochemical redox reaction and electric field-induced ionic migration and doping are effective approaches to modulate the molecular orbital energy levels of electroactive polymer materials. Consequently, the carrier mobility and resistance states of the storage media can be regulated in a controllable manner. In this project, we would like to design and synthesize a series of novel soluble-processable polymer memristive materials, the molecular structure of which can be tailored by functionalizing them with electroactive moieties of different strengths, spacer moieties of different steric effects for the electroactive pendant groups, or nanostructured electroactive materials, and to investigate the modulatory effect of electron transfer and transport, weak intermolecular interactions, molecular stuctures and aggregation-state structures of materials, and the micro-structures of the thin films on the memristive performance of the polymer-based memristors. We also would like to explore the methods that can be used to mimic the fundamental synaptic functions of short-term/long-term plasticity (STP/LTP), spike-timing dependent-plasticity (STDP), spike-rate dependent plasticity (SRDP) and “learning-memory- forget ” experience in a polymer memristive system by using various pre- and postsynaptic spikes. With the optimization of the chemical structure of the functional polymers and the micro/nano-fabrication techniques, we are aiming to demonstrate the prototype implementation of polymer-based memristor devices.
