新元古代中期(~830-635 Ma)是Rodinia超大陆运动和裂解的关键时期。研究进展显示全球存在两个古纬度差异明显的大陆群。以华南、印度为代表的北半球高纬度大陆群以碎屑岩沉积地层为特征,以劳伦、澳大利亚为代表的低纬度大陆群以富含碳酸盐岩沉积地层为特征。华南板块曾经历多次大规模纬向运动,揭示北半球高纬度大陆群可能具有独立的板块构造系统。项目拟利用南华盆地、印度小喜马拉雅地区和Marwar盆地丰富的新元古代地质记录,综合古地磁学、锆石U-Pb年代学、事件地层学和构造地层对比等方法,系统研究新元古代中期北半球高纬度大陆板块的运动学特征,确定华南和印度板块之间以及它们与低纬度大陆之间的古地理关系。结合全球古地磁数据,开展该时期动态的古地理重建。该研究对新元古代地球多层圈重大事件关系研究具有重要意义

The middle Neoproterozoic (~830-635 Ma) is a critical period for the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia and plate movement. Existing data show the possibility that during this period, there were two plaeo-latitudinally different continent groups. The high-latitude continent group, represented by South China and India, was located in the northern hemisphere and has siliciclastic-dominated pre-Cryogenian strata. The low-latitude continent group, characterized by Laurentia and Australia, occupied the equatorial region and southern hemisphere and has carbonate-rich pre-Cryogenian strata. Paleomagnetic evidence suggests that South China and potentially, its adjacent plates such as India, may have experienced multiple rapid latitudinal movement and their drifting history is significantly different from that of the low-latitude continents (e.g., Laurentia and Australia). This project aims at establishing a correlative tectonostratigraphic framework between the Nanhua basin in South China and the Less Himalaya region and the Marwar basin in northern India. Within the established stratigraphic framework, a detailed paleomagnetic study will be conducted to reconstruct the paleogeographic relationship between South China and India and their relationship with other low-latitude continents. A dynamic paleogeographic reconstruction will allow to evaluate the relationship between plate movement and climate change, partially the initiation and termination of the Cryogenian glaciaions.
