Two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides (MXenes) materials with metal conductivity and abundant surface functional groups are ideal candidates for the building blocks of room-temperature gas sensors, especially for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, it is still lacking of systematic researches on the individual component functions and interface engineering mechanisms of the heterostructures. The development of miniature light-emitting diodes and chip packaging technology promotes the integration of light-assisted chemical sensors. Combined with the optoelectronic gas-sensitive materials transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), this research designs of 2D/2D MXene/TMD heterostructure based gas sensors for the medical diagnosis, by regulating the geometric configuration and distribution, assisting with visible light illumination, and the use of circuits and wireless transmission devices. The key scientific issues include the structure-property relationships of sensitive materials and the light-excited sensitization sensing mechanisms. The electrochemical analysis, in-situ characterizations, and theoretical calculations are utilized to explore the electronic and chemical effects involved in the synergistic effects of heterostructures under visible light illumination, which provides not only research perspectives but also theoretical supports for the construction of the highly efficient VOC sensors for disease diagnosis.
