The development of pollen is a complicated cytological process in rice, and any abnormal behaviors in this process would result in male sterile. Therefore, the molecular mechanism analysis of male gamete development is a research hotspot at present. A rice mutant dms1 was identified from EMS-treated Jinhui10 showed no apparent difference between the wild type in vegetative stage. But in reproductive stage, the meiosis of pollen mother cells and pollen were abnormal in dms1, and finally caused complete male sterility. dms1 phenotype was controlled by one recessive nuclear gene. By mapping and complementary verification, one gene encoding a coiled-coil domain protein was selected as the candidate gene. DMS1 is a novel gene in rice. In addition, DMS1 located in the nucleus and had transcriptional activation activity. Based on above results, this research aims to investigate the physical, chemical and immune causes of abnormal meiosis behavior and pollen in dms1, to identify the expression pattern of DMS1, to screen out proteins interact with DMS1 and downstream regulatory genes by DMS1. Those exploration will provide a foundation to study the molecular mechanism of meiosis and pollen development in rice.
