Antibiotic pollutants possess potential risks to environmental ecology and human health because they are hard to be biodegraded and easy to induce resistance genes. Recently, Bioelectrochemical technology exhibits wide prospects applied in remediation of refractory organic pollutants and resource utilization of wastes due to its environmental friendliness and low energy consumption. So far, Limited study focuses on the iron/carbon composites to enhance the degradation of antibiotics in river and lake sediments by biocathodes. In addition, the mechanism of the removal of antibiotics in bioelectrochemical systems is still unclear. This project amis at optimizing the iron-doped biochar mediated biocathodes to alleviate the contamination status of Dongting Lake sediments by representative antibiotics. Besides, the behavior and mechanism of biocathodes removing the antibiotics and its intermediate products will be revealed. The effects of applied voltage and environmental parameters on the performance will be explored. The transformation mechanism of antibiotics degraded in the bioelectrochemical systems will be also analyzed. This will clarify the migration and transformation pattern of antibiotics in the practical remediation process. In addition, the project will explore the intermediate toxicity and comprehensively evaluate the feasibility of this method to remove antibiotics in river and lake sediments. This project will provide theoretical guidance and technical support for the control and in situ remediation of antibiotics in water-solid environment media such as rive and lake sediments.
