Taxonomic and functional biodiversity of stream ecosystems is currently threatened and changed by the loss of environmental heterogeneity caused by anthropogenic modifications and climate warming, which further lead to metacommunity structure changed. Therefore, there is considerable urgency and important to understand the effects of environmental variation and functional traits on metacommunity. Although the application of metacommunity theory in nature ecosystems have been substantially reported by numerous researchers, and environmental heterogeneity and species equivalence (i.e. functional similarity) are two key ideas behind metacommunity theory, current knowledge of how metacommunity vary within the environmental and trait space remains limited. Our proposal will focus on the taxonomic and functional organisms of stream insect assemblages collected in a number of sub-basins and over months within Tiaoxi basin. Combining a variety of statistical analyses, we will assess the differences in environmental heterogeneity and functional similarity between sub-basins and between months, examine the idealized metacommunity structures and the effects of deterministic (environmental filtering and species interaction) and stochastic processes on metacommunity assembly within each sub-basin and each month. And then, we will explore the effects of environmental heterogeneity and functional similarity on spatial and temporal dynamics of metacommunity structures and assembly mechanisms. Our proposal will bring a scientific base for the conservation and management of biodiversity in stream ecosystems.
