Mate choice is widely considered to be a mechanism conducted by animal invididuals that is closely linked to their reproductive success. In this process, animals can evaluate the potential fitness gain by mating with different mates based on their phenotype and behavior, and maximize their reproductive success by choosing the “mates with the best quality”. However, the detailed mechanism of mate choice remained unclear in most of the free living non-human primate, as direct observing and tracking of individual in the field turn out to be very difficult. The golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinothecus roxellana) live in multilevel societies consisting of several polygynous familial units (breeding bands) and a bachelor group (all-male bands). Despite all the adult females were socially exclusively attached to one resident male, they have been observed to transfer between familial units (“divorce and remate”). Moreover, as all the resident male would be ultimately taken over by a new adult male, the female may conduct a significant influence on the outcome of a male-male combat for takeover of a familial unit. In addition, extra-unit copulation was frequently observed in the field and more than half of the offspring were sired by extra-unit males in this population. Based on the long-term field study we plan to combine behavioral observation, morphological measurement, MHC and microsatellites genotyping and to investigate three items: (1)figure out the effects of male phenotype on female mate choice decisions, (2) clarify the behavior strategies of female mate choice based on the dominance relationships among males and social relationships between male and female, (3) compare the similarities and differences of genetic preference between long-term mate and short-term mate, social mate and genetic mate, then test the indirect benefit hypothesis, to figure out whether female improve their benefit via seeking to copulate with males with better genetic quality. Thus, this project would comprehensively illustrate the mate choice strategies of female golden snub-nosed monkey based on studies of gene, phenotype and behavior. Our results could promote further understanding on the reproductive behavior of social primates, as well as provide theoretical guidance for conservation of this endangered species.
配偶选择是择偶者通过评估异性的外在特征和行为表现,选择最优交配对象,并通过特定的择偶策略,提高自身适合度的繁殖机制。在此过程中,个体如何识别出优质配偶,并通过何种配偶选择策略,实现自身适合度的最大化,是学者们孜孜不倦探索的热点科学问题。川金丝猴生活在一雄多雌制的社会体系中,研究发现雌性可以突破社会结构的限制,掌控配偶选择的主导权,但其评估配偶的指标和择偶策略尚不明晰。本项目以秦岭川金丝猴为研究对象,通过野外艰苦的跟踪观察,结合群内雌雄个体繁殖行为的精确量化、表型测量和年龄估算,应用分子遗传学的分析方法,我们逐步阐明了雌性川金丝猴的择偶标准与择偶策略,得到了以下研究成果。1)雌性选择的社会配偶具有更高的MHC杂合度,微卫星多位点杂合度和微卫星多样性,且雌雄间MHC基因相似度更低;同时,通过广义线性混合模型拟合多个遗传变量和雄性年龄发现,MHC相似性低的雄性更可能与雌性形成社会配偶对;这表明雌性川金丝猴在选择社会配偶时支持“遗传互补”、“杂合子优势”和“多样性优势”假说。而雌性在选择遗传配偶时则偏好与自身MHC基因中度相异的雄性,与“中度遗传互补”假说一致。2)除了遗传上的偏好外,雌性对配偶的选择还会因雄性年龄和等级变化,相较其他年龄段的雄性,壮年雄性(10-15岁)更容易成为主雄,拥有的后宫规模也更大;雌性在选择单元外交配对象时,倾向于选择高等级的壮年雄性,但在迁移时则偏好从高等级壮年雄性所在的单元迁移到低等级却年轻的雄性所在的单元。3)雌雄个体间MHC相似程度越高,雌性越倾向于从原单元迁移出去。综上所述,雌性通过对社会配偶和遗传配偶的不同选择偏好,选择雄性的年龄和等级,通过迁移变更配偶以及发起单元外交配等一系列策略,最大化自身的婚配收益。
