英文摘要
The Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition was one of the most critical intervals in Earth history. It witnessed the formation of the supercontinent (Pangea), closure of the Paleo-Tethys ocean, large-scale volcanism (Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province; regional arc volcanism in the Tethyan region), transfer from cooling to warming climate and the largest mass extinction along with severe environmental perturbations both on land and in the ocean. These events were nearly synchronous, but their cause-and-effect relationships remain unclear. Key pieces of information are lacking: First, it`s unclear about the duration, frequency, and intense of the arc volcanisms near the Tethyan region; Second, little is known about the evolution of primary producers at the base of the food chain. Yet these producers were a significant factor in environmental perturbations (e.g., chemical weathering, anoxia, global warming); Third, it`s still unknown about the relationships among volcanisms near the Tethys, ecosystem perturbations on land, and the unstable marine ecosystem. In this proposal, as part of the “Major Research project on Tethys Geodynamic Systems”, we will investigate the biological and geochemical records of sediments (from the Late Permian Wuchiapingian Stage to the Middle Anisian Stage), from terrestrial, terrestrial-marine transitional, and marine settings around the margin of the Tethys, which include South China, North China, Junggar, Iran, and Oman cratons. Our research will focus on: 1) the sedimentary records of volcanism from the arc volcanisms in the Tethyan region based on mercury concentrations and its isotope records, temporal and spatial distributions of volcanic ash beds, as well as geochemistry of zircon; 2) the extinction and recovery models of primary producers both on land (e.g., plants) and in the ocean (e.g., algae and acritarchs) by integration of biological and geochemical proxies; 3) biological influences on environmental perturbations, such as the effects of land plants on atmospheric CO2 concentrations, continental weathering processes, and the effects of marine productivity on oceanic anoxia; and 4) the toxic effects to organisms (e.g., malformed evolution) of elevated heavy element fluxes (e.g., Hg, As, Pb, Ni) linked to volcanism and intense continental weathering. Our aim is to understand the cause-and-effect relationships among biological and environmental perturbations both on land and in the ocean during the Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition and their connection to evolution of the Tethys Ocean. This research would be a great example to explore the effects to the ecosystem perturbations in the earth surface by the evolutions of the Tethys.
本项目针对特提斯演化的鼎盛期即古生代与中生代之交这一重大转折期有关地球内部圈层演化和表层生物-环境演变之间的因果关系、驱动机制和动力学过程中存在的问题楚,特别是对衔接深部过程与表层系统的食物链中能量“金字塔”底层的陆地植物和海洋生产者这一关键缺环开展从火山活动-火山记录-海陆生产者-环境效应系列研究,取得五个方面突破性的进展。第一、查明了上二叠统-下三叠统地层中火山灰粘土岩与碳同位素(无机碳δ13Ccarb和有机碳同位素δ13Corg)负漂有很好的正相关性,揭示了火山作用对地球表层碳循环的影响,为建立地球深部与地球表层碳循环之间的联系提供了科学依据。第二、利用海-陆沉积岩中汞地球化学记录查明二叠纪-三叠纪之交全球火山记录的时空分布规律及其物质来源,建立了汞元素作为判别沉积岩中示踪火山活动及其应用的理论和方法。第三、利用数据模型和实验模拟对二叠纪-三叠纪之交大灭绝过程中陆、海生产力进行定量评估,揭示由火山活动引起的全球植被生物量和海洋初级生产者在大灭绝后的降低是导致早三叠世持续高温和生物延缓复苏的主要原因。第四、利用地球系统模型(SCION)揭示了陆地植物与环境之间的协同演化机制及其对气候的反馈作用,在晚二叠世末期,全球平均陆表温度升高了约13.3℃,部分低纬度地区的温度甚至超过40℃,形成了所谓的“温度死亡带”,这些区域的植物群完全消失,成为大灭绝的核心区域。第五、提出二叠纪-三叠纪之交植被覆盖率的大幅降低、水圈循环的极端化以及Pangea大陆的普遍干旱化,造成陆地降水在地表的滞留时间大大缩短,使得物理风化侵蚀速率大大增加,进而改变了陆地化学风化作用的主导类型,从以供给限制型化学风化模式为主转变为动力限制型化学风化模式为主,削减了化学风化速率增长的幅度,并最终导致灭绝后化学风化强度降低。
