Low-cost, large-scale and solution-processed semiconductor colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising optoelectronic nanomaterials showing unique optical properties such as high absorption coefficients, tunable band gap and multiple exciton generation. The CQDs have demonstrated as efficient photosensitizers in solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells that effectively convert renewable solar energy into hydrogen energy, which is one of the promising pathways to solve the global energy crisis. Currently, one significant goal in this field is to realize high performance and long-term stable PEC system based on environmentally friendly CQDs. This project aims to study the synergistic effect of Cu-doping and interfacial InGaP layer engineering for environmental-friendly InP/ZnSe core/shell CQDs, optimizing their optoelectronic properties and improving the performance of corresponding CQDs-based PEC cells. The main research objectives include: (1) Controllable synthesis of Cu-doped/InGaP alloyed eco-friendly core/shell CQDs; (2) Nanostructure-related optical properties and band structure engineering; (3) Transient photoinduced charge carrier dynamics and the theoretical study of electron-hole wavefunctions; (4) Optimized performance of CQDs-based PEC cells. These investigations can promote the developments of environmentally friendly CQDs-based solar energy conversion devices, representing an essential step towards the commercialization of this emerging solar-to-fuel conversion technology.
