This review of the ecology of fungus feeding in insects includes a summary of the economic importance of fungivorous insects as pests of cultivated and edible wild mushrooms, including (on cultivated fungi) sciarid, phorid and cecidomyiid flies. Other topics discussed include habitat variability (spatial and temporal), host selection, population ecology and guilds and communities (including sections onDrosophilaspp.,Pegomyaspp. and Ciidae). The high degree of polyphagy observed in fungivorous insects can be explained by strong selection pressure towards polyphagy, by low cost of polyphagy, or by both. Ephemeral and patchy habitat structure have important life-history and population and community ecological consequences.
