Halogenated hydrocarbons and aryl hydrocarbons have been widely used in almost every sector of society in both developed and underdeveloped nations. The industrial and commercial utility of several halogenated hydrocarbons has been directly related to their many common chemical properties which include:1) high chemical stability (resistance to oxidation, reduction and hydrolysis), 2) resistance to photochemical degradation, 3) inflammability, 4) high lipophilicity and miscibility with a large number of organic solvents, 5) resistance to biological breakdown processes.Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) typify a halogenated hydrocarbon formulation which exhibit the characteristics (l)-(5) and, not surprisingly, the PCBs have been used as flame retardants, organic diluents, dielectric fluids in capacitors and transformers, heat exchange fluids, plasticizers and immersion oils. Many other halogenated hydrocarbons are not used as industrial compounds, per se, but have enjoyed widespread applications as pest control agents. 2" 4 l, l, l-Trichloro-2, 2-bis (p-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT), is an example of a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon which has
