This paper describes extensive work within Nuclear Electric, to develop a procedure which assembles knowledge in structural mechanics and materials science for assessment of components operating in the creep range. The procedure, called R5, is written in seven parts, or volumes. These volumes and the associated failure modes which are addressed are described. The intent throughout R5 is to avoid, wherever possible, full inelastic computer solutions. The paper outlines the reference stress concept which is used in various parts of R5. Another feature of R5 is that creep damage under cyclic loading is characterised by ductility exhaustion methods. This approach is believed to describe more closely the mechanisms of creep damage. Improved understanding and the data base support this approach. Finally, the paper describes some applications of R5 to operating components and one application in some detail.
