RESULTSThe genomic location of the transcriptional units that function in transformed cells as well as in early and late adenoviral infection is given in Figure 1. We have demonstrated that, within the left 11% of the Ad2 genome, promoters that are active early in infection are located at approximately 1.5 map units, as well as 5 map units, and late in infection they are located at approximately 9 map units (Wilson et al. 1979). The sequences and splicing arrangements that are present in mRNA were determined by electron microscopy and by gel analysis of RNA-DNA hybrids (Kitchingman et al. 1977; Berk and Sharp 1978).
