Alveolar type 2 cells are recognized as epithelial progenitors of the lung gas-exchange region. In this issue of Cell Stem Cell, provide evidence that this is not so during neonatal life, and that alveolar type I cell reprograming is a key event during regeneration post-hyperoxia injury.
