This study was designed to compare the clinical results of treatment with radiation alone and with combined radiation and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in gastrointestinal cancer. The possible results if 5-FU alone were administered or if no treatment at all were given were not considered. No attempt was made to determine whether any enhancement of results from combined therapy would be due to synergism, additive effect, improvement in the therapeutic ratio, etc. A process of randomization was used in assigning chemotherapy in addition to radiation or no chemotherapy but radiation alone. Other variables assessed which might have influenced results were: age, sex, local extent of the lesion (denoted by Dukes'' classification) in Groups 1 and 2, histologic grade of the lesion (Broders'' method), whether the extent of the lesion was determined by surgical exploration or clinical examination, and whether the lesion was primary or recurrent. It is emphasized that the conclusions apply only to the type of disease studied, to the dose of radiation administered, and to the dose and dosage schedule of 5-FU employed.
