The family Rhabdoviridae includes bul let-shaped (from vertebrates and inverte brates) or bacilliform (from plants), enve loped viruses composed of a single strand of negative-sense RNA and five proteins [I], These viruses have been isolated from or detected in tissues of a wide variety of ani mals and plants. In addition to mammals, fish, and insects, rhabdoviruses or rhabdovirus-like particles also have been obtained from birds, reptiles, and protozoa.
