Published studies on growth of the vertebral bodies and spinal canal are re stricted to selected features of certain regions of the spine. The paucity of informa tion about growth of the spine can be attributed to problems inherent in the con duct of longitudinal studies of the entire spine in the living, and the difficulty in obtaining suitable osteological material for a cross-sectional growth study. The present investigation is an analysis of 20 juvenile and 112 adult columns of the Australian aborigine. Unique features of the present study arc that it presents information on certain aspects of the spine that are not accessible to study in the living and the data of the juvenile series are compared with corresponding data for adults of the same ethnic group. Although the material is from a closed ethnic group there is reason to believe that the growth pattern described is similar to the patterns in humans of more developed communities. Thus, a radiological ossification study [ABBIE and ADDEY, 1953] of the extremities in the Australian aborigine revealed no ethnic peculiarities, and another study [KETTLE. 1900] showed that, although the weight increment in the Australian aboriginal children is less than in the white Australian children there is no significant difference in the height increment.
