The disabilities present in hereditary dwarf mice are similar to those induced by hypophysec-tomy in rats, except as regards the reproductive system. In male dwarfs, in contrast to hypophysectomized rats, spermatogenesis takes place, with the formation of motile sperm. In female dwarfs the reproductive system, although not so advanced as in the male, nevertheless is further developed than in pituitariless rats. The condition of the reproductive system in dwarfs thus contrasts with that of rats in which the anterior hypophysis is completely lacking, whereas other disabilities in the two types are similar. This suggested that the pituitary growth hormone in dwarfs might be suppressed without a corresponding suppression of the gonad-stimulating hormone. Biological tests show that such is the case. The latter hormone, as revealed by implants into normal immature female mice, is present in the pituitaries of dwarfs in greater concentration per unit weight of gland than in normals. Implants of dwarf pituitaries into dwarfs[long dash]a form uniquely sensitive to administration of the growth hormone[long dash]failed to give any growth response. The results thus show a high concentration of the gonad-stimulating hormone and a suppression of the growth hormone. This is directly correlated with the disabilities exhibited by the dwarfs.
