Ethylene can induce the deach of cortex cells of Maize root and then induce the formation of Aerenchyma. With the increment of the concentration of ethylene, the number of death cells increases. Using TUNEL (terminal deoxynculeotidyl transferasemediated dUTP nick end labeling) experiment, it is found that nDNA of cortex cell is fragmented and the number of 3′OH terminals of DNA is increased. These results firstly provide directl evidence that ethylene induced formation of Aerechyma involves PCD. At the same time, it was f ound that the activity of SOD and CAT in the root of reactive oxygen species (ROS) decrease clearly . Since ROS can induce PCD, the PCD induced by the extraneous ethelene maybe mediated by ROS.
