Methanogenic bacteria have been shown to possess three unique coenzymes which so far have not been found elsewhere in nature. Coenzyme M, 2-mercaptoethanesulfonic acid is a methyl-transfer coenzyme, its methylated derivative, 2-(methylthio)-ethanesulfonic acid serving as the substrate for the methylreductase system of methanogens [1-3]. Coenzyme F420 is a low potential electron carrier, mediating electrons between hydrogenase and NADP or between formate and NADP [4-6]. The methylreductase system recently has been resolved for a small oxygen-sensitive cofactor which cannot be replaced by any of the known coenzymes [7]. In addition to these coenzymes two new factors have been found in extracts of the methanogen, Metha-nobacterium thermoautotrophicum. We report here on the properties of these factors which are designated F342 and F43 o for their major absorption bands at 342 nm and 430 nm respectively.
