Psychogenic polydipsia is related to midrange food consummatory rate reinforcement schedules. It is only slightly reduced by presession administered large water loads. It varies with type of food offered and food deprivation-controlled body weight. It is affected by type of fluid offered and by drugs. Adjunctive drinking can be brought under separate operant control. Implications for the dry-mouth theory for polydipsia, displacement activities discussed by ethologists, and thirst research methodology are noted.(38 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
