The population has increased by about ten percent since 1960. In common with most of western Europe, England has an aging population. In the last 30 years the proportion of the population aged 65 or over has increased from 12 percent to 16 percent. It is expected to be 22 percent by the year 2031. In contrast, the proportion of children (i.e. those aged under 16) fell from 25 percent to 20 percent, and is expected to be 18 percent in 2031.
