When EGF binds to the extracellular domain of the receptor it stimulates the tyrosine specific protein kinase activity associated with the intracellular domain of the recept~ r.~-~ This results in the autophosphorylation of the EGF receptor and phosphorylation of several target protein^.^,^ Different cell types express different numbers of cell surface EGF receptors from none on lymphoid cells to a high of 250 000 per cell on keratinocytes. 8-10 The high level of EGF receptors on keratinocytes highlights the important role EGF plays in regulating the growth and differentiation of epidermal cells both in tissue culture and in vivo. In tissue culture
