New column packings consisting of Zipax® controlled surface porosity supports with non-extractable chemically-bonded organic polymeric stationary phases have been studied to determine their properties in high-speed LC applications. Solute retention is a function of the concentration of polymeric stationary phase. It is postulated that penetration and interaction of the polymeric phase by the carrier results in a new partitioning medium which demonstrates a useful chromatographic selectivity characteristic of this combination. At high loadings columns with highly viscous bonded-polymers show a decrease of partition ratios with increasing carrier velocity, apparently produced by stationary phase mass transfer limitations. Column efficiency is also influenced by the concentration of porous bonded polymer as well as the viscosity of the carrier. Columns of Zipax® support with optimum polymeric stationary phases exhibit efficiencies which rival those of columns with mechanically-held liquids. A high pressure slurry-packing procedure using balanced-density solvents is useful for preparing columns of the bonded-phase packings.
