Cell proliferation and riboflavin synthesis were retarded in 2 strains of C. guilliermondia and one of C. flareri when their media were made practically free of Fe. Riboflavin was detd. by the spectrophotometer. When the conc. of Fe was 0.5-1 [gamma] per 100 ml. in the basal medium, the highest riboflavin yields were obtained. Addn. of 10 [gamma] of Fe per 100 ml. sharply reduced riboflavin synthesis but enhanced yeast growth. The optimum Fe conc. for riboflavin synthesis by Clostridium acetobutylicum was 1 [gamma] per ml.
