EDICAL CENTERS IN EAST AND WEST AFRICA M have reported an unusually high relative frequency of non-leukemic lymphomas in ~h i ld ren .~ , 5 , * , 15 Limited incidence figures from these same areas indicate a rate at least 5 times that in the United The overwhelming majority of these lymphomas in children in equatorial Africa are similar in their clinical, gross anatomical and histological features and this has resulted in their identification by eponym-‘‘the Burkitt tumor”-or by such terms as “the African lymphoma” or the “absurd” lymphoma. These names imply a disease unique to Africa and, indeed, a number of investigators consider the histopathology specific for an entity rarely seen beyond certain geographic limitations in Africa.12v By some, therefore, these lymphomas are thought to be determined by climatic factors.2 It continues to be our belief and experience, however, that the so called “Burkitt tumor” is not peculiar to Africa. Rather, i t represents a striking variation in expected incidence of non-leukemic childhood lymphoma, a disease relatively uncommon e1~ewhere.l~ In support of this we are reporting from the accessioned material at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology 20 selected examples of non-leukemic lymphoma in American children. These displayed a biological behavior and a histological appearance similar or identical to the majority of those cases reported from Africa.
