In recent years, there has been much discussion on empty categories (ECs) within the framework of Government Binding Theory. It has been suggested that partitioning ECs into different class types does not involve any extra stipulations but follows from independently motivated principles of the theory. For example, Chomsky (1982) has argued that the types of ECs simply mirror those of overt lexical categories. In this paper, taking Chomsky's (1982) functional determination approach to ECs äs a point of departure, we will examine the phenomena of the so-called "zero pronouns" phonetically null items in A-positions in Japanese. Simple examples with zero pronouns are given below.
