No decrease in blood glucose levels was found to occur in fasting Myxine glutinosa over a 3-week period. After glucose loading at 8 oC the blood glucose values showed a maximum 1-2 hr. after the injection and a return to normal within 1-2 days. About 15% of the injected dose was excreted. Crude hagfish insulin at an approximate dose of 5 IU/kg evoked hypoglycemia 2-3 days after the injection and a similar slow hypoglycemic response was also obtained after high doses of ox insulin. In spite of these findings, indicating that insulin may control Myxine blood sugar levels, isletec-tomy did not evoke any hyperglycemia in fasting or force-fed hagfish, and the glucose-loading curve of isletectomized hagfish fell within the range of that of glucose-loaded normal hagfish. Hypophysectomy did not cause any lasting hypo- or hyperglycemic response (in 3 weeks of observation time), nor any microscopical changes in the islets, but only a transient rise in the blood glucose values which was ascribed to the mechanical trauma of the hypothalamic region. A transient hyperglycemic reaction lasting for about 18 hr. was also obtained after nonspecific injections, such as filtered sea water and distilled water. The blood glucose levels after administration of adrenalin [epinephrine], ox glue agon, thyroxine, pig corticotropin, ox thyrotropin, and sheep prolactin containing growth hormone did not in any case rise above that of the nonspecific reaction in spite of some morphological signs of the efficacy of the mammalian hormones in the hagfish.
