In this paper a model of a finite cylindrical shell for buried pipelines in a seismic environment is presented. Surrounding soil is modeled as a Winkler medium and a more realistic ground motion input for seismic waves is chosen instead of the customary sinusoidal one. The analysis is applied to natural gas pipelines made of welded steel. Moreover a quasi-static approximation which has found wide acceptance in the beam and lumped mass models of buried pipelines is then discussed. It is found that the quasi-static approach apparently leads to large stress and strains values as well as a larger model amplitude in all but the rigid body mode.
