Two colorimetric methods are described for the determination of [delta]-aminolaevulic acid. Both are sensitive to 0.05 mole. One method is based on condensation with ethyl acetoacetate in 2[image] NaOH to form a product which gives a red color with Ehrlich''s reagent (p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde). The other method is a modification of the Jaffe picrate reaction and depends on the reaction of an alkaline picrate complex of aminolaevulic acid with HC1 to give an orange-red color. The effects of varying different factors in the determination, specificity and application to biological materials are described for both methods.
