The Macraes deposit is developed in the regional scale Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, which was mineralised under lower greenschist facies conditions. The shear zone is >500 m thick and structurally overlies upper greenschist facies rocks. Host schists have two end-member rock types: micaceous schist and feldspathic schist, and these are interlayered at all scales. Associated black sheared rocks are micaceous and have elevated graphite contents. Syn-mineralisation deformation of these different rock types has resulted in complex structure on the 1–100 m scales, and this complexity governs the geometry of the ore deposit.
