We thoroughly enjoyed reading the classic papers in the 1995 journal. Choosing just 12 papers to represent the contribution of 50 years of Anaesrlzesiu to the literature is really very difficult, but our list would include Dr Murphy’s paper [I]. This was the first report of flexible fibreoptic technology being applied to the airway. On behalf of the U.K. Difficult Airway Society we asked Dr Murphy (who now works in Chicago) how he came to do what he did. Part of his reply follows.
