Recurrent (introgressive) backcrossing of P. vulgaris * P. acutifolius to either parent increased fertility, as measured by pollen stainability and seed set per pod, but invariably resulted in the loss of traits from the non-recurrent parent. When hybrids were backcrossed to each parent species alternately (congruity backcrossing; CBC), fertility decreased in early generations, but gradually increased later, reaching parental levels of seeds/pod by the 4th or 5th generation, although percentage stainable pollen did not reach parental levels. The morphology of CBC hybrids depended on the dosage of the parent species; morphology was intermediate when the pedigree had an equal dose from each parent, but favoured the majority parent when dosage was unbalanced. Morphologically abnormal individuals occurred in each generation. Completely new phenotypes (e.g. for seed and flower colour) appeared after the 2nd backcross generation, due, it is thought, to recombination.
