Chloromethylated polystyrene resins are useful for the preparation of polymer-supported reagents or catalysts.'The activity of immobilized catalysts, however, is often less than that of soluble catalysts. 2 Moreover, the catalysts derived from chloromethylated polystyrene are not always stable under various conditions because of the presence of benzylic linkages: for example, benzylic ethel3 and phosphonium salt4 decomposed under acidic and basic conditions, respectively. Recently, the introduction of a spacer arm between the catalytic moiety and the polystyrene backbone was carried out to improve these disadvantage^.^.^ In most cases immobilized catalysts with spaced active groups are synthesized from spacer-modified polymer supports prepared via steps from polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene. These catalysts contain functional groups other than the catalytic group and are in a low state of purity. Catalysts in a high state of purity can be prepared from polymer supports that contain the required functional group. In this article we report on the preparation of spacer-modified polymer supports by the polymerization of w-bromoalkylstyrene and on the activity of phase-transfer catalysts derived from polymer supports.
